Brett Winterble: SWAT teams should always use overwhelming deadly force
I am really starting to think that we are indeed a blood thirsty nation. Maybe we do not have the gladiators fighting the lions or the lions eating the Christians, yet. But it is not clear to me how much further we need to go to get there. Just let one of them vocal bible thumpers show up at a ‘being gay is a big deal’ parade and they might rather face a big puddy tat rather than a bunch of mostly naked and painted twinks acting like heathens.
Look at the country’s interest in and acceptance of violence on TV and in the media. Much of it gratuitous violence. We have leaders who start wars which kill tens if not hundreds of thousands and we are so insulated at home it does not impact us. Or is it we just don’t care?
Then at home we all the violence of the street. We let illegal aliens roam at will through our society, creating mayhem. We accept gang behavior as normal. Drive by shootings hardly make the paper. Violent illegal drug trade is rampant yet we do not close our borders.
To top it off, we support the use of surveillance cameras and unmanned planes, warrantless wire taps, seizure of assets, warrantless searches of our premises, etc. Yes, all this on ourselves, by the government. And if the police are trained by Blackwater mercenaries then that is OK too. Sixty years ago, swat is what you did to flies. Now we have specially trained legalized gangs we call SWAT teams. And we are OK with that. SWAT teams are used for everything from potentially lethal hostage situations to ensuring kids get their vaccinations and removing a child from the home of loving parents so the kid can get yet another medical exam.
Then there is all that fantastic new technology from energy waves which create pain, to shotguns firing multiple rounds of exploding ammunition per second, surveillance cameras, unmanned aircraft, etc. All this technology paid for by our forced contributions to the government. We think all this in the hands of the police and the military makes us safer. Safer from?
Obviously this technology in the hands of the government can be turned against us at a moments notice. The SOB (Son Of a Bush) has seen to it that he has the undisputed power to do so. So when SWAT teams are called out to handle a situation I get very antsy. The deployment of these killers are generally at one person’s command with little, if any, oversight. Yet we are OK with that. I realize that there are times when lethal force must be met with lethal force in society and that is one of the generally recognized responsibilities of government. But I fear that with our propensity for the glorification of violence we are setting up the mechanism which can destroy our democratic republic.
So when Brett Winterble starts wailing because a police chief wants to take another look at SWAT teams under his command and determine if they need to be so violent all the time, then I just want to tell Winterble to shut-up and THINK for a moment. Yes, we do not want those who we have designated to assist in protecting society neutered but on the other hand we want them to be very circumspect regarding their actions. Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, individuals resort to their training and their training, it seems, too often is obey and use maximal force.
Here then is Winterble’s article dated 3/19 from humanevents.com entitled “The Softer Side of SWAT“:
Disclaimer: The following is true; the names have not been changed, to embarrass the guilty.
There are few adjective-noun combinations that you want to avoid at all costs, drunken pilots, sleepy surgeons, happy Democrats — well, add one more to that list — softer SWAT Teams {Winterble sets up his straw man then proceeds to discredit it. A very old tactic used by reporters who are too damn lazy to write a more thoughtful and useful article.
Southern California is arguably the most dangerous area of the country for law enforcement officers to work. The tens of thousands of police officers operating here understand that every call they get could be their last. {Blank out on why it is dangerous. Just accept the violence Winterble, it is easier than actually thinking.} That reality was underscored on February 7, when two members of the LAPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit attempted a hostage rescue from a gun wielding gang member and were shot and wounded — one remains hospitalized, one was killed {I have not researched this incident but why did two highly trained government killers get shot by some gang banger? Who was conducting this operation?} That officer was the first killed in the entire history of the LAPD SWAT team {Hint, that shows how infrequently they do get killed. This is good. But Winterble is making it sound like being on a SWAT team is a death sentence. It is not, normally.}: they are that good {OK, so then Winterble starts talking about the risks.} Cops in and around LA understand the risks, but they also understand that if things get hot, the SWAT team will be there to take care of the situation. In Los Angeles, when LAPD SWAT rolls up, bad guys know they have a world of hurt coming down on their heads. {Exactly my point. Who are the bad guys? Those who oppose the laws set down by those in authority to do so. Like the SOB at a stroke of a pen.}
This is why the recent report that the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team was looking to soften up {I doubt seriously they used the term ’soften up’.} — not their image, but their membership — comes as a shock. The Los Angeles Daily News, reported on March 18 that Police Chief William Bratton (the same Bill Bratton who tamed Manhattan and the 4 boroughs of New York during the 1990s) had received a report from the Los Angeles Police Commission recommending that LAPD SWAT end the 'insular culture' (read male-dominated culture) on the SWAT team, and for the department to soften {Winterble just loves that term…show where in the report they used it!} standards to admit females into the unit. The report said that male SWAT members tended to “under-emphasize negotiating skills, patience, empathy and flexibility while over-emphasizing physical prowess and tactical acumen.” {EXACTLY MY POINT, WINTERBLE!} That's right: the SWAT Team is too tough for Tinsel town. {Think Winterble, think!}
Excuse me, but doesn't LAPD have a whole team dedicated to negotiation, patience and empathy (I mean, in addition to the mayor's office)? And isn’t the whole point of a SWAT team to be a weapon to use when all else fails? {The $100,000 question is, ARE THEY?! They are not, if you will just become knowledgeable on the subject. Could it be that better integration of the ‘touchy feelly’ with the brute force would be wise? It would have stopped the overreaching by the Denver SWAT team!}
Let's keep it simple enough for even an LA pol to understand. When SWAT gets called its because someone has been or is about to be killed. PERIOD. {NO, THIS IS PATENTLY FALSE. I thought reporters were supposed to be somewhat knowledgeable about the subject matter they are witting about. Obviously, Winterble is not.} They are the tip of the spear for law enforcement. They need to be intimidating. They don't need to empathize with the killer or would-be killer barricaded in the 3-year-old’s bedroom. {BUT THEY NEED TO THINK!}
I can imagine the improved, softer {Give it a rest…another straw man in the making.} SWAT team now. A Prius rolls up with a well meaning looking psychologist stepping out, with a megaphone, asking if the hostage-taking cretin would like to talk about his childhood. Imagine the scene, as shots ring out, the well meaning SWAT therapist could shout out "excuse me, Mr. Criminal, we understand your rage, could you please um, come out and talk.…. if you want to of course, its up to you, we are here to PROTECT and SERVE you. Did you want a decaf skim latte?" Perhaps if they needed to escalate the situation, she could declare sternly, "Don't make me come up there mister. If I have to ask again, you'll not get any TV in the jail day room." Sure it's stupid, but is it any dumber than a softened SWAT?
Bill Bratton has apparently been flooded — not by SWAT members angry at the proposed change, but by the wives of SWAT members! These women understand better than Chief Bratton the reality of the mean streets of LA, SWAT is not a social petry dish, or a place to work out affirmative action issues, it's a place to chase, stop and catch the bad guys –and softening the standards will result in more deaths — of officers and civilians alike. I can't wait to see what they have in mind for the Navy's SEAL teams and the Marine Corps. {For reporters I think they are recommending new standards which Winterble would not be able to meet. Like thoughtful and intelligent reporting.}
